Day 12 🇫🇷 Mont-Saint-Michel

The camping was in a farm, very particular. The whole family worked with animals and in the fields.

About 2 hours drive were separating Lollo and I from our new destination. A place I also visited with my parents but that more than the castles, remained impressed in my heart and memories: Mont-Saint-Michel.

Just few kilometres before getting there, a sign of an old windmill catched my attention, so I drove up an hill to enjoy the view.

Le Moulin De Moidrey

Even if small and in the long distance, I immediately recognised Mont-Saint-Michel.

Can you spot it?

I parked Lollo and changed clothes, cause I knew already the place and I had something in mind. This time in fact I intentionally wore my flip flops. The view of the island became better and better at any steps.

Depending on the tides, the island can be fully surrounded by water or just be dry as it is today. Daily the sun and the moon gravitational forces create two small tides but the changes are barely visible. When the sun and the moon align, the combined gravitational pull flexes the oceans more, creating a flood tide. That’s when the water flows all around the island and you need to plan to see it as my parents did.

So when I came here the first time, there was a low tide but while we were visiting the Abbey on top, the water began to approach. It was quite fast so that in few hours, the only way to leave was over the bridge. That was impressive to spectate, especially for a child.

There were quite a lot of visitors but everyone was walking the bridge. I stepped down and another guy followed me. The sand, mixed to earth and water was a thick and slimy mud. Kind of the one you use for mus baths. Very slippery! I had to cross two streams of water with a fair amount of current pushing me aside.

I remember people using feet and sticks to write in the sand and watching their creating from the abbey while the water approached. Let me walk you with me for a brief moment:

The statue of Saint Michel on the top was shining, as usual.

I took the time to walk all around the island before entering. The people you see in the photos, first crossed the bridge and then accessed the beach without too much hassle.

Inside a labyrinth of alleys and stairs could confuse even someone with a great sense of orientation. The views are breathless and the eye can see several kilometres till the horizon. I entered the abbey with an audio guide and that’s what I saw:

My visit was over and I was really happy that I came back to this magic place. Once I returned to the parking, it was 4:30pm, our final destination in France waa going to be Ouistreham and without motorway, it was going to be a 2,5 hours drive. Lollo and I both arrived tired, so while she took a deserved rest, I indulged in a cold glass of Chablis and Moule et Frites.
