Day 12 🇸🇰 Spiš Castle & Dobšinská Ice Cave

Today I’m going to reach Hungary but first there are two spots I would like to visit. One of them is Spis castle, the biggest European castles by area (41,000 m²). Massive!
It is impressive to see it from the distance when approaching, as it stands on a green hill in contrast to the white stone.

I kept my motorcycle gear on and just left the helmet and jacket on the bike. Daniel, who’s in charge of the parking, was very kind and kept an eye on my stuff. He doesn’t speak English but we understood each other anyway. He drives very often to Lignano Sabbia d’oro in Italy!

The views from the castle are stunning. Several people are parasailing in the area 🪂

Inside some reconstruction of the original interiors and the original tower with very narrow stairs carved into the rock. It was amazing to climb it up as they did centuries ago.

In the castle I met Katarina, one of the guides. She told me a couple of insights and interesting stories about the place.

Say goodbye to Katarina and Daniel as we are heading back to the Slovakia Paradise for a visit to an ice cave!
After passing Bojnice, the road has been much fun. Great curves and views on the way.

Once part of a bigger cave system, the Dobšinská Ice Cave has won the conditions for permanent ice thanks to a collapse of a tunnel. Inside the temperature ranges from -4 to 0 degrees (25F – 32F). It is a 25 minutes hike from the parking and since it’s cold inside, I brought my motorcycle jacket with me.

Going in. Beside the stairs, everything you see it’s ice!
Through a small whole on the ceiling called “the well” rain and snow can get inside and solidify.
In some points the ice is 26 meters (85 feet) thick.

The weather was changing and I got back on my motorcycle to escape the clouds but just before the Hungarian border, I had to surrend.

Welcome to the land of the Magyars
Surreal atmosphere

The first impression is of a poorer country compared to what I’ve see. So far. Many old and forgotten buildings.

A forgotten structure
A church next to a building skeleton
A stork nest on a power line post along the road

The land in Hungary is flat and straight and so are the roads.
I truly enjoyed my time in Slovakia 🇸🇰 and look forward to experiencing new things in Hungary 🇭🇺.
